What’s in Our Ferrets’ Diet?
Ferrets are becoming increasingly popular as pets across the UK, and it’s easy to see why. They’re full of personality, endlessly entertaining, and incredibly affectionate in their own chaotic way. But there are some parts of ferret ownership that can feel a bit overwhelming at first, especially when it comes to figuring out what to feed them. Let's see how one of our ferret customers uses Waita products as part of their diet:
I still remember the confusion around diet and nutrition when we brought our first ferrets home. From my research, I knew they were obligate carnivores, yet so many of the foods marketed for ferrets were packed with plant-based ingredients, which just didn’t seem to make sense. Ferrets lack a cecum, so are unable to digest any plant matter, they thrive on a diet of animal proteins and fats, so why didn’t the dry foods on the market reflect this?
A raw diet is often considered the gold standard, as it most closely reflects what ferrets would eat naturally (small rodents, birds and their eggs, reptiles and insects). However, this isn’t always practical for every owner or every situation. Even for raw feeders, having a high-quality dry food on hand can be incredibly useful. Whether you’ve forgotten to defrost enough food (as often happens in this house 😅), you’re heading away, or you need something that can be safely left down during the day for slow or picky eaters.
That’s why focusing on the ingredients of a food is so important. High quality, high meat, cat foods with minimal plant-based ingredients can be a much better option than traditional ferret foods.
